Oh yes he is! Because just when I said that Shane Warne had a lot to prove in the IPL, he, and his side, the Rajasthan Royals have come out with a performance that would put most guys to shame. Me included.
Three losses in a row and the critics were on his back. Again, me included. And why not? At that age, where class and form begin to blur, it is rather difficult to exonerate such losses in a row. That, to me is an issue with his age only, when every game a player features in is monitored with the eye of a hawk.
But Warne does a Houdini again. Brings in Adam Voges, gets Yusuf Pathan to open the bowling, inspires Siddharth Triwedi to bowl better and viola! The Rajasthan Royals are suddenly amongst the top three alongside Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore, in the process having got the better of each of Kolkata, Deccan, Punjab and Chennai on the way.
It is but not the end of the road. In such an open tournament, no side can feel safe till they are actually there. However, they will now feel much more confident of getting into the next round and despite having had the experience of starting off 2009 with losses, rebounding with a string of wins and then continuing to crash to defeats, eventually to bow out of the tournament, they should be feeling good about themselves.
So should Warne! Despite been hit for three sixes by Albie Morkel off as many deliveries.
