Phil Hughes ain't no Sehwag yet

Ok, so Phil Hughes is a good cricketer. A batsman who has a couple of centuries in his first few Test matches. And the yada-yada-yada about his talent. No doubting that! But to christen him as the next Virender Sehwag is pushing the envelope a tad too far.
Because the one characteristic that Sehwag is never short of is confidence. And the translation of that confidence into runs against oppositions which end up passing a shiver most of the rest of the batsmen. Like the Aussie attacks in their prime.
Compare that with Phil Hughes. He had an excellent debut and became an automatic choice for the Ashes. Such was the selectors’ (blind) faith, that he had no back-up as an opener. And he was thoroughly exposed by Steve Harmison in the very first tour game. The rest of the series was a blur as he struggled to put bat to ball, and was subsequently dropped; leaving Shane Watson to fill up.
The selectors should not make the same mistake, and thank god that there is talk of getting Watson back if he is fit. Nor should the media. Making runs against an attack that is shorn of quality that Geoffrey Boycott’s mum would get the runs against it, is not yet a mean feat. Miles to go before he is touted as the next big thing in Australia, let alone the world!
