So, the BCCI has been living in the world of oblivion for a long time. IPL, according to them, does not bring about injuries, increasing the matches from 60 to 94 will not dilute the brand, while, the performances of the Indian players will not be adversely affected by the same.
Yet, Gautam Gambhir has been bold enough to write in his latest newspaper column, that more captains will now look at resting their key players if the results of the games did not matter, given that the ICC World T20 follows immediately after the IPL.
This makes for an interesting following. While I will stop short of calling this a slap across the BCCI face by Gambhir, it is definitely saying, in no uncertain terms, that for him, international cricket is a much bigger platform to perform instead of this petty million dollar leagues.
Already former Australian cricketer, Andrew Symonds has raised concerns about how the raising of the teams from eight to ten and the subsequent rise in the games to 94 would cause much problems to the 'cattle' - the players - and give rise to injury issues. And given that someone who has given up to concentrate on IPL and likes only, has spoken about worries about excessive cricket, then the BCCI and IPL better sit up and take notice.
It will be interesting to see whether today's IPL game between the Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders will actually see the likes of Sehwag rested by Gambhir.
