If rumours are to be believed, Mohammad Yousuf has decided to hang up his boots. Now that is old news, isn't it. He has already done it twice - or was it three times - before!
But that is Pakistani cricket for you. Players are axed, they retire, selectors change, they come back, they are made captains, they retire again and the entire cycle goes into a loop.
Yousuf was no different. His career can easily be divided into two phases; one before the 2007 edition of the ICC World T20, and the second after it.
Mohammad Yousuf was a classic batsman, who the grace of Mark Waugh, and a beard reminiscent of the great WG Grace. Despite not possessing the ability to clear the fence - a la DLF Maximum style - he was good enough to have a strike rate of around 70 in ODIs.
However, he was dropped from the side for the T20 format in 2007 for which he protested by retiring and moving to the ICL. Sense prevailed as he decided to come back, but the ICL cried foul and took him to court due to which he had to come back to the ICL, before finally returning to the international fold.
One would have thought that the PCB would decide against breeding such a player; instead, they made him the captain on the tour of Australia. The Pakistanis lost all their game in Australia, and the PCB charged the allegations of trying to break team unity against him.
The result - a life ban from international cricket! Talk about life going the full circle!
