Insider news of why Ponting and co. refused the IPL contract!
April 9th 2010 18:54
There you go. For all those who thought that the likes of Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke are altruistic enough to let go of the lucrative IPL contract; thats because another $2 million CA contract was awaiting them. In Australian currency.
Why then fly to country which would be hot, muggy, injury-inducing, allow them to play around five games, and earn them an average of $250,000***. That is peanuts I tell you! It is not about the Ashes!
Plus, Ponting can use the IPL as his post-retirement pension. Just like his former team-mates in Haydos and Gilly. Clarke needs that captaincy cap as desperately as he wanted to get back to Australia from the middle of the Kiwi tour. Mitchell Johnson probably wanted to go, but Ms Jessica probably had a say in the matter.
Watson did get to the IPL, but then, he already had a contract. And he knows his body. Wouldn't probably be long before it gives way. Heard of making hay, while the goose lays those golden eggs.
Deviating a tad, the previous IPL game between Mumbai and Punjab had a Steve Waugh-Herschelle Gibbs of the 1999 World Cup moment in it. Do read it here.
*** If you do have doubts about how does it work out to be $250,000 only, let me know.
