Out of the frying pan, into the fire. Out of the fire, into a short circuit. Out of a short circuit, and the building collapses.

The question though is, will IPL still escape unscathed? After all what has happened in the past one week?

England had a John Major who was a die-hard cricket fanatic. Australia have John Howard. But the Indian PM has been called upon to adjudicate on the cricket 'field' for a totally different reason. No, cricket is barely his passion!

It is the multi-faceted, multi-entity and the latest, and by far, the biggest controversy to have hit the IPL that has dragged the who's who of India into the whole mess.

And while even the doomsday conspirators have not yet spoken about the end of the cricket world IPL yet, the likes of Lalit Modi and BCCI need to do a lot more than only look at the Pause button.

While one may see back-room machinations pull the BCCI out of this one as well, the fact of the matter is that it is not too often the Income Tax Department, Chief Ministers of States, former and current BCCI chiefs, businessmen alike, the PMO and the Prime Minister himself have been associated with one single controversy related to Indian cricket. And that, by itself, could change a lot of things!

In fact, not all of them are young.

There are many of them, however, this IPL.

It started with Gautam Gambhir and I have written a whole load on it here. And here. For some reason, something's gotten into him and his restraint-levels have almost dipped to zilch.

While, I had already clarified that I did not agree with whatever he said, there is another brewing issue. His anger and lack of control getting the better of him and resulting in his three successive run-outs in the tournament.

Then, there is Sourav Ganguly. The Dada of Kolkatan cricket. Quite clearly, he seems to have forgotten that, it is not his Indian team of 2001, but a sub-standard Kolkata Knight Riders that he is leading.

So, calling the side pathetic and rubbish, to me, makes no sense. Nor did it make any sense to the team. They lost even more miserably in the next game against the Chennai Super Kings. By nine wickets and with eons of time left.

The latest captain to join the tirade-shelling list is Anil Kumble. The Bangalore side had lost to the Deccan Chargers, and Kumble had had his man. One Jacques Kallis. The buck had been passed.

Again, it could have been a tactic to rev him up. Or probably not. Just pure frustration. Whatever it may be, it would have done better for the senior statesman to have had a quiet little word with his man, instead of talking ill of his best batsman of the tournament in the press conference.

Wonder where did all the humility go? Thank God for the smaller mercies like Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni.

What is it about Shane Watson that is so irritating that even if he were to score another 10k runs in Test matches, he would still be regarded as good, but not great?

I guess, I can answer that one. Within a span of three or four months, Watson has now, twice, rubbed the wrong side of two left-handed batsmen after dismissing them. Twice. Gayle, in a Test match, and Saurabh Tiwary in IPL.

And I must say that he has been lucky to have got away on both occasions. Both, by the match referee and the batsman. Because, in case he had forgotten, the batsmen had both, a helmet and a bat. One to protect themselves, and the other to put to better use than only score runs, against those who thought that they could get away with Watson-like shenanigans on the field of cricket.

Watson needs to realise that he ain't no 12-year old boy who has suddenly got the better of the high school bully in an arm-wrestling game. In fact, had this been a game played in his backyard, without being televised to those millions around the world, Watson could have easily found himself at the receiving end of a stick.

Of course, Watson does have an excuse. His Australian captain! When he has been led by a skipper, who is probably, one of the most ill-behaved captains in recent times, then there cannot be much that Watto can do, or can he?

Funnily, and recently, Watson had said in an interview that Ponting had had a word with the rest of the team on how to and how not to behave on the field. There, now you know where Watson's behaviour comes from!

Is it bye-bye Adam Gilchrist?

April 10th 2010 12:55
Adam Gilchrist, in his autobiography, has said that the moment he dropped VVS Laxman's catch in one of the Tests in the series back home against India in 2008, he knew that he was over. End of career.

So, is that how all the big guns know when they need to finish it

There you go. For all those who thought that the likes of Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke are altruistic enough to let go of the lucrative IPL contract; thats because another $2 million CA contract was awaiting them. In Australian currency.

Why then fly to country which would be hot, muggy, injury-inducing, allow them to play around five games, and earn them an average of $250,000***. That is peanuts I tell you! It is not about the Ashes!

Read the Part - I of this story here.

Shoaib Malik was obviously the talk of the town, and of the cricket fans in both India and Pakistan. And amidst all the brouhaha over Malik finally escaping a legal mess by divorcing his former wife, another Pakistani story seems to have popped up

As if the on-field and off the field, but cricket-related, controversies were not enough for the Pakistani cricketers, two of their breed are now involved in 'Miss'-matches of a different kind.

For starters, Shoaib Malik was involved in 'triangular' series of events with the announcement that he was going to marry the Indian tennis star, Sania Mirza. (she is now ranked 100th in the world, yet, she continues with her star status

It was not 1999. It was 2010.

It was not World Cup semi-final. It was the IPL

The Shoaib Malik-Sania Mirza-Ayesh Siddiqui triangle took another twist today, when the Indian police of Hyderabad seized the Pakistani cricketer's passport and questioned him for ninety minutes.

The reason? Ayesha's father lodged a police complaint against Malik that he had married his daughter and was now refusing to accept the same, even as he announced to the world that he would be tying the knot with Indian tennis star, Sania Mirza

When I wrote the part I of this this issue, I did not have the cognizance of what was to follow from the Gambhir stable. Now, the second part becomes necessary.

Not happy at having had to apologize and get reprimanded by Lalit Modi, Gambhir went on to add later that he stood by what he said
